What is FDI Technology’s Platform Modernization solution?

FDI Technology’s Platform Modernization solution integrates modern electro-optical sensing, target tracking, fire-control functions, operator interfaces and compatible weapon-system interfaces into existing platforms through a platform-specific system architecture.

Modernization programmes can incorporate fire-control computation, ballistic computation, AI-assisted target functions, stabilization and command-and-control integration where required by the compatible platform and mission configuration.

The objective is to extend relevant operational capabilities through coordinated integration of the platform, sensors, operator controls and compatible weapon interfaces.

System-Level Platform Modernization

Modernization begins with the architecture of the existing platform and the capabilities required for its intended role. Sensors, operator controls, weapon interfaces, platform-state information, stabilization requirements and the command-and-control environment are considered together. The task is to define how new functions can work with compatible elements already in service, with the integration scope determined by the platform and mission.

FDI Technology approaches this work through system integration and platform adaptation. Electro-optical sensing, tracking, fire control and operator information form parts of a coordinated configuration. FALCON EYE provides a relevant example of an integrated system that can support compatible modernization programmes. The objective is to develop the required operational capabilities while keeping the relationship between the host platform, sensors, controls and weapon interfaces clearly defined.

Modernization Workflow

The modernization scope follows the characteristics of the existing platform. This high-level sequence describes the transition from platform assessment to a configuration shaped by the required capabilities, available interfaces and mission context.

  1. Platform Assessment

Existing platform architecture, interfaces and mission requirements are evaluated at system level.

  2. Integration Definition

Required sensor, control, fire-control and platform functions are defined for the compatible configuration.

  3. Sensor & EO Integration

Electro-optical observation, target detection and tracking are integrated where required and compatible.

  4. Fire-Control & Computing Integration

Fire-control functions, available target and range information, and ballistic computation are integrated according to configuration requirements.

  5. Operator & Platform Interfaces

Operator controls, system information and compatible platform and weapon interfaces are coordinated.

  6. System Integration

Sensor, control, fire-control and platform functions are brought together within the defined architecture.

  7. Modernized Operational Configuration

The resulting configuration supports the required capabilities within the platform-specific mission and integration scope.

Electro-Optical & Sensor Modernization

Compatible existing platforms can incorporate electro-optical observation and target-tracking functions as part of a wider upgrade. Visual observation, target detection, range-information integration and operator situational awareness are considered in relation to the platform’s fire-control and control arrangements. The selected capabilities depend on the sensor configuration and the interfaces available for integration.

FALCON EYE connects electro-optical tracking with fire-control, ballistic-computation and AI-assisted target functions in relevant configurations. Its modernization role concerns this integrated capability, extending beyond the visible electro-optical assembly to the information and control functions used by compatible platforms.

Fire-Control Modernization

A modernization programme can introduce a fire-control architecture that coordinates target and range information, sensor data, operator controls and compatible weapon-platform interfaces. Fire-control computation and ballistic computation can form part of the required configuration, supporting target assessment and the generation of a fire-control solution for the compatible weapon system.

Integration of a ballistic computer is considered within this broader platform task. Available platform and environmental information, tracking inputs and operator-control requirements inform the scope. The relevant functions are configured around the existing platform architecture and mission requirements, with engagement control retained by the operator.

AI-Assisted Modernization

Where supported by the selected system configuration, AI-assisted target detection, classification and tracking can be introduced to support observation and target assessment. Their contribution is considered alongside the information already available to the operator and the fire-control process.

These functions support situational awareness and operator decision-making within a compatible modernization configuration. They do not replace the operator’s authority over target assessment and engagement control.

Operator Interface & Control Modernization

Modernization also concerns the information and controls through which the operator uses the platform. Observation, target information, tracking state, fire-control information, system state and compatible weapon-platform controls can be coordinated within the updated operator architecture. The interface provides the operational connection between the integrated functions and the operator’s task.

The operator arrangement is considered alongside the existing platform and the capabilities being introduced. Target assessment and engagement control remain the operator’s responsibility, supported by the available sensor information and computational functions.

Stabilization & Platform Control Integration

For compatible mobile platforms, the modernization scope may include stabilized observation and weapon-platform operation. The relationship between existing platform movement, sensor orientation, tracking and operator controls must be addressed within the updated architecture. The selected configuration determines which stabilization and platform-control functions are relevant.

FDI Technology considers this as part of adapting the system to the host platform. Sensor and platform coordination, the intended installation and the operator arrangement inform the integration requirements for the modernization programme.

Weapon-System Interface Integration

Compatible existing weapon-platform interfaces can be integrated with the updated sensor and fire-control architecture. Weapon-platform compatibility, operator controls and the relationship between sensing and fire control define the integration scope. The configuration is shaped around the interfaces and functions available on the host platform, together with the capabilities required by the modernization programme.

Command & Control Compatibility

The relevant command-and-control environment can form part of the modernization scope. Depending on the configuration, target-information sources and compatible external system interfaces are considered alongside the platform’s operational network context. Compatibility is assessed for that environment and the agreed integration requirements, with the modernized platform treated as part of its wider operational setting.

Platform-Specific Integration

Each existing platform presents a distinct combination of architecture, available interfaces and physical integration constraints. Sensor requirements, weapon configuration, operator arrangement, stabilization needs and mission requirements influence the modernization scope. The command-and-control environment is considered within the same assessment.

FDI Technology’s approach is modular and platform-specific. The selected system composition follows the compatible platform and the capabilities required for its role. Fixed installations and mobile platforms may therefore use different modernization configurations, even where they share relevant sensing, fire-control or operator-control functions.
